Opening Activity 9/21/11

It is the 40 year anniversity of when President Nixon signed the national Cancer act and cancer research has come fairly far since then. Over this time period we've made a lot of progress such as finding new types of cancer and searching for medicine's that would benefit individuals based on the type of cancer they have instead of a large group of different kinds. All of the progress that has been made is incredible and hopefully we will make so much more very soon.

Opening Activity 9/20/11

Ruby Bridges was born in 1954, while she was growing up she was the first young girl to go to a white person public school while she was growing up in the 1960's. Back in the day when so much segregation was happening she and her family were the only ones to fight back at first even though it led to struggles for their family such as loosing jobs and a lot more. Also if Ruby never would have steeped foot in a school of white children things might be different from how they are now.

Opening Acitivity 9/19/11

Recently Rafael Lopez and two married couple went out for the night at a club in Minneapolis when while walking back to the car they were beaten up by a gang of men. They tried to get help from the police but theyu continuously were ignored by the police. I think it's horrible how the police wouldn't help them. This is their job and they completely ignored the victims multiple times. It's scary that this happened nearby and if something were to happen like this to me I don't know if anybody would help me.

Unusualness, proximity, timeliness

1.They usually answer the question 3 times. first time, they answer what you want to hear. Second time, they explain their answer and third time they blurt out a soundbite after you wait a second in silence.
2.The non- question question is where you ask something that you already know that might lead the interviewer into opening up more and telling you what you really originally wanted to know.

Opening Activity 9/16/11

In Jonesboro, Arkansas there was a school shooting and 4 students and a teacher were killed. 2 young boys that attended that school pulled the fire alarm then met together in woods nearby the school and while everyone was walking outside in the fields and Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden shot and killed 4 girls and 1 teacher. The belief is that Johnson and Golden shot or wounded some of the people because of negative past interactions with them, such as their ex- girlfriends. My angle for this story would be to come from all of the students point of view.

Teen music artist Justin Bieber is hitting the road for his world tour in a month, He's stopping in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile. Justin is also preparing for his new Christmas album coming out in December. I think Justin Bieber is awesome and will have a lot of success with his world tour along with his new Christmas album. It's also really good to know that Justin is still humble after everything now that he is a huge star.

The criteria of newsworthiness was prominence and timeliness

This article is about an 85 year old man who was trapped in his car for 40 hours straight. This man was driving down a steep road in Texas to look at a pond. The car couldn't makes it's way back up the hill resulting in the car rolling back into a ditch. The man was trapped with no food and almost no water. After a very long time before his car battery ran out he repeatedly honked his horn desperate for someone to find him. For the last 6 hours of being trapped he took out a pen and started writing his will and a goodbye note to his family on the armrest. Eventually a neighbor saw the car and rescue finally came.

Opening Activity 9/13/11

I think google plus is a very cool and interesting thing. If they opened this up for everyone I feel as if it will be a huge hit. I think it will be because where facebook is mostly for the social networking part Google Plus has the social networking part but has a bunch of games so it might attract a new crowd to that site. I think that I would definitely use Google plus and I also think a lot of other people around the world will use it a lot too.

Opening Activity 9/12/11

The documentary Hero's of the 88th Floor is a very powerful movie about what the people trapped on the 88th floor while the attack on 9/11 occured. Thes 30 or so people were trapped on the floor not knowing what was going on. Their only way out was to go down the C staircase because the other ones were destroyed and in the C staircase the door was jammed shut. They finally made it out and with the help of some leaders. Those leaders decided instead of walking down to safety they were going to climb up the stairs to see if anyone on the floors above them needed help. They saved a bunch of people and were named the hero's of the 88th floor. I can't even imagine what all of these people went through. I admire those hero's so much for the courage they had to head upstairs instead of going immediately to saftey and for all of the people's lives they ultimately saved that terrible day.
